SUMMARY:John Gogo
DESCRIPTION:Western Canadian singer/songwriter John Gogo is from a large musical family in Nanaimo\, on Vancouver Island. After a two year stint as a Chokerman in a logging camp\, he began his professional musical career with two of his brothers in the progressive rock band Graphics\, touring around BC and Alberta. In 1985 John switched gears and began playing his acoustic guitar in pubs\, beer parlours and at folk festivals. He released his first album ‘Coal & Wood’ in 1990\, with original songs about his family history in mining and logging. He followed it up in 1994 with ‘It Never Fails’\, an album with more of a roots rock feel\, which included the cover and regional hit ‘Baby Blue’\, featuring a guitar solo by the song’s writer Bill Henderson (Chilliwack). More touring and TV appearances followed\, from Victoria to Toronto\, and his music videos (‘I Don’t Even Know Her’\, ‘String of Pearls’ and the title track) enjoyed rotation on MuchMusic & CMT. The year 1997 saw the release of ‘Leave a Light On’\, with the single and video ‘Brown Eyes’. The Victoria Times Colonist called John “one of the most talented singer/songwriters this area has ever produced” and the album “an atmospheric pop gem”\, a sound achieved with the help of co-producers Wayne Lorenz (Daniel Lanois\, Emylou Harris) and David Kershaw (Sarah McLachlan Band). In 2002 John began a side career\, appearing in the Other Guys Theatre production ‘Moodyville Tales’. Next up was the 5 year run of ‘Good Timber – Songs and Stories of the Western Logger’\, this time as co-creator as well as performer. John released his 4th studio album ‘One of These Days’  in 2010\, and for the first time he was the sole producer and songwriter\, while he continued to tour with ‘Good Timber’. His 2015 release ‘Coal & Wood (Revisited)’ is a return to his early ‘folk singer’ days\, featuring 2 songs from the original album plus a handful of new originals about people\, places and historical events of Canada’s western islands. \n  \nDoors at 6 pm show at 7 pm Tix $10 show or $30 show\, dinner\, dessert\, and coffee or tea.\nThis is a licensed show but all ages are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:John Gogo live @ In the Beantime Café

SUMMARY:The Lion The Bear The Fox
DESCRIPTION:The Lion the Bear the Fox took over thirty years to find each other\, but only thirty days for Christopher Arruda (the lion)\, Cory Woodward (the bear) and Ryan McMahon (the fox) to realize they were meant to join their voices as one. The Nanaimo Daily News calls the trio “a musical force of nature” to be reckoned with.“All three artists are known for the passion they bring to their performances and the honest songs they write\,” says the Ladysmith Chronicle\, and they have succeeded in creating gripping\, dynamic songs while capturing a sincerity rarely heard this side of the 2000’s. Canadian broadcasting icon and noted wino Terry David Mulligan adds: “One of the joys of a life in radio and music is hearing new artists for the first time and knowing they’ll be around perhaps for a lifetime. And so…. I say with respect\, If you get a chance..check out The Lion\, The Bear and The Fox. A lot of talent on one stage.

SUMMARY:Cuba in Transition
DESCRIPTION:David was born in London and followed his parents to South Africa in the 1960s. He completed a technical degree in photographic arts and sciences before working as a stills photographer on Athol Fugard’s Boesman and Lena. After the movie was completed David started on another movie that was halted by the South African Security Branch and he and the other British technicians were deported. \nHe returned to England and worked for many years as a freelance editorial photographer in Europe before becoming the Royal Ballet’s photographer for seven years. After leaving the ballet company he began to exhibit his photographs in Europe and then in New York at the 4th Street Photographic Gallery. His work is now held in the Museé national d’art moderne collection in Paris and he has exhibited in most of the major European capitals. David’s recent photographic exhibits include the Chemainus Theatre Festival and ArtSpring on Salt Spring Island\, where he now lives. He is also an Equity theatre stage manager\, lighting designer and author. \nDavid will also be exhibiting these photographs at the Cowichan Theatre in Duncan in June\, 2017 and at ArtSpring on Salt Spring Island in October 2017. \n  \nCuba in Transition: The Artist’s Statement \n\n“The socialist revolution has not failed in Cuba. It is a work in progress that we can all learn from and support. The country is going through another unique phase in its revolutionary cycle. The capitalist world\, and the United States in particular\, would have you believe that Cuba will soon fall again under its domination. And return to the hedonistic Mafiosi-run playground that it was before. \nAs the northern neighbour\, Canada is dominated by US culture\, and from across the Straits of Florida\, Cuba is already feeling the return of that cultural imperialism. There are dramatic changes now in the look and feel of areas of downtown Havana as breaches appear in the economic embargo that the US introduced at the start of the Sixties. \nIt will be a tough fight to stop US dominance there\, as it still is in Canada. The so-called restrictions on communication (such as internet controls on bandwidth that are as much of an economic necessity after the failure of a form of socialism in Venezuela as they are political in form) may be able to stem that tide. But the “improvements” that are impatiently being introduced in the name of progress may win out in the end. \nThat is why it is important to document the current realities and open up conversation so we can all learn and prepare to stand up against the looming capitalist invasion. \nIt is interesting to note that Cuba is in a unique position among non-capitalist countries. Even Vietnam and China\, once enemies of the United States\, are now accepted as US trading partners\, but the US Congress is among those who still see Cuba as a socialist threat. The New York Times quoted Wayne Smith\, a former top American diplomat to Cuba and a prominent critic of the embargo\, as putting it this way: “Cuba seems to have the same effect on American administrations as the full moon has on werewolves.” \nThe Cuban revolution has not been defeated and its work is not yet over. These are dangerous times\, though\, and there is a strong need to challenge both the misconceptions and misinformation American media organizations spread. \nI sincerely hope that by examining Cuban cultural traditions we can support the joy that pervades Cuban society and encourage the love and friendship that is part of everyday life there.” \n\nDavid Baughan \nMay\, 2016 \n

I’m so proud of what we all did together! I REALLY love it! \nAt the release shows I’m going to play songs from the album and then share some of the new material I’ve been writing over the last year as well. I’ve been SO enjoying the writing process and all the new songs that have come out of it. In fact\, I love them all so much that I can’t decide which ones to put in the set so I’m going to let the audience pick for me…some by request (for those who’ve heard the new songs already) and others by random selection out of a jar… that seems like a fair and fun way to make a set list!” – ES \nFor more information\, tickets and show details go to https://www.facebook.com/emeraldspecks \nDoors open and dinner is served at 6:00pm and the show starts at 7:00pm!
